Nordic fog

No sun, a white-gray sky, planes disappearing in layers.

What it sells
Calm and privacy. The fog hides the neighbors and leaves the architecture alone.
Best for
Retreats, mountain and lake homes, wellness projects.

Nordic fog is the atmosphere archviz artists reach for when they want calm: no sun, a white-gray sky and planes that fade one after another. The building stops being an object and becomes part of a moment.

It works because it takes away the strongest tool, direct sunlight, and forces the image to live on values and silhouettes. Contrast is short, so one decisive light or dark accent carries the whole composition.

The recipe

HDRIovercast, no visible sun
Sunoff
Fogdense, high scattering, sky-colored
Temp.6500 to 7500 K
Postlifted blacks, low contrast

Starting points for Corona or V-Ray, not rules.

Step by step in 3D

  1. Turn the sun off and light the scene with an overcast HDRI. Rotate it until the brightest part of the sky sits behind the camera or to one side.
  2. Add global volumetric fog (a Corona volume material or V-Ray environment fog) with a color sampled from the sky, so distant planes take on the sky’s value.
  3. Separate the scene into 3 to 5 depth planes: foreground, building, middle ground, background. Each plane should read one step lighter than the one in front of it.
  4. Keep materials matte and slightly desaturated; wet surfaces can carry the few highlights.
  5. Check the frame in grayscale before adding any detail. If it does not read in three values, move masses, not textures.

Post-production

Lift the blacks, keep contrast low and add a fine grain. A Z-depth pass helps reinforce the layering without making the fog muddy.

Where to study it

Peder Balke, Hammershøi, Michael Kenna. The reference library says what to look at in each one.

A starting phrase

Nordic fog, 5:40 a.m., before sunrise, July. Only one window is lit. 50 mm lens at eye level, the architecture small in a corner.

Write the moment in one sentence before you model, then check the render in the value study tool. The other six atmospheres are in the Atmosphere Notebook.
