Mormaço (hazy heat)

A high sun behind a veil of humidity. Soft shadows and a blue-green background that dissolves.

What it sells
Warmth and time slowing down: the feeling of a long afternoon. Shadows soften and colors warm up.
Best for
Beach and country homes, resorts, outdoor amenities.

Mormaço is the Brazilian word for the humid, hazy heat of a tropical midday, when the sun is high but veiled and everything far away turns blue-green. It is the opposite of the crisp tropical postcard.

In 3D it is a lesson in restraint: soft shadows from a high sun, a light haze only in the distance, and greens pulled down so the image feels hot instead of saturated.

The recipe

HDRImilky sky, diffuse sun
Sunhigh, large size for soft shadows
Foglight, only in the distance, blue-green
Temp.6000 K
Postdesaturate the greens

Starting points for Corona or V-Ray, not rules.

Step by step in 3D

  1. Use a milky-sky HDRI or a physical sky with high turbidity, and keep the sun high, around 60 to 75 degrees.
  2. Increase the sun size so shadows soften without disappearing.
  3. Add a light distance fog tinted blue-green, starting well behind the building so the foreground stays clean.
  4. Desaturate the vegetation and lower its brightness; tropical greens in renders are almost always too saturated.
  5. Let one surface, a white wall or a pale floor, carry the brightest value of the image.

Post-production

Pull green saturation down, add a slight warm cast to the highlights and keep the shadows open. A gentle bloom on the brightest surfaces sells the heat.

Where to study it

Eliseu Visconti, Castagneto. The reference library says what to look at in each one.

A starting phrase

Mormaço, just after lunch, late November. The house has been empty for days. 35 mm lens at eye level, a low horizon and two-thirds sky.

Write the moment in one sentence before you model, then check the render in the value study tool. The other six atmospheres are in the Atmosphere Notebook.
